Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has appeared in a new interview that has aired today. The Norwegian royal gave a much-anticipated interview on her connection with the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

The interview was filmed with Crown Prince Haakon at their residence in Skaugum on Thursday. It took place as her son Marius Borg Høiby's rape trial neared an end at Oslo District Court. Høiby has pleaded not guilty to the four charges of rape. However, he pleaded guilty to several driving offences, to an aggravated drugs offence and breaking a restraining order, and “partly” to threats and aggravated assault.

As his trial began last month, the Norwegian royal faced mounting questions about her link to Epstein.

Clearly on the verge of tears, she said: I feel so manipulated, and when you are manipulated, you don't realise it from the start."

She then added: "It is incredibly important for me to take responsibility for not checking his background more carefully.

"And to take responsibility for being so manipulated and deceived as I was."

Speaking of her regret over meeting Epstein, she added: "Of course I wish I had never met him."

The Crown Princess has already issued an apology over her connections and admitted to showing "poor judgment".

She then explained that she needed time before she could explain herself in detail.

Although she has stayed away from her son's trial, the timing of today's release suggests she wanted the proceedings to end before she spoke out publicly.

Not an official member of the Royal Family by blood, Høiby was four when his mother married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001.

Høiby, 29, is facing 40 charges ranging from four counts of rape and serious assault and abuse to drugs and traffic violations.

He denies the most serious charges and his defence lawyers told the court on Thursday he should be cleared of rape. They also admitted that an 18-month jail term was appropriate for the offences that he had admitted to.

The royal should be sentenced to seven years and seven months in prison, the prosecutor in the trial told an Oslo court earlier this week.
